In the artist's own words: "She just wanted to be called Dimitra. The ancient Greek goddess, Demeter, Dimitra, goddess of the Earth, protector of marriage and motherhood. Seldom, if ever, associated herself with love affairs, like the rest of the Olympian gods, Demeter was proud and distant. Mythology and folklore identify her death as a result of her younger brother, Poseidon, raping and depicting her inside a cave. Dimitra of Lesvos was born a man, Dimitris. And she was abandoned for her choice to live her life the way she wanted to· isolated from her local community, forgotten by her family and the doctors who were supposed to take care of her, abandoned by the driver who hit her with his car and let her die helplessly. A modern-day Saint, the fights Dimitra endured cannot be forgotten and can only pave the way for humans to finally live their life the way they truly want to. The painting, a hagiography of Dimitra of Lesvos, outlines the sadness of the realization that this world was never prepared for her. A symbol for the LGBTQI+ community, the story of Dimitra of Lesvos shall only strengthen the voice of those opposing oppression. And she just wanted to be called ∞Dimitra∞"
