The Singapore Fire Brigade was established in 1888 and eventually became part of the Singapore Civil Defence Force in 1989. The hose tower of the Central Fire Station along Hill Street was Singapore’s highest point in the 1920s. This was before all the high rise buildings in the area started popping up!
The Central Fire Station is still functional today. The artist has observed fire engines coming out of the red gates! There is also a Heritage Gallery in the station recounting the history of firefighting in Singapore.
This is part of a series of sketches of historical buildings and structures in Singapore. Largely monochromatic, these sketches evoke a sense of nostalgia, reminding Singaporeans of how far the nation has come.
