The Boxers and I , 2023
112.5 x 146 x 3 cm (h x w x d)
Watercolor

“The Boxers and I” represents how the Worldbuilding perspectives we have explored in Humanities Core transport me into the past. It imagines me living through the Boxer Revolution, fighting with passion for the preservation of my country and its traditions and beliefs (inspired by Boxers by Gene Luan Yang). The painting represents the concept of “thick description,” of understanding the full context around a historical situation, including social and cultural contexts, which is crucial to understanding the event. The colors are inspired by the yellow, blue and red colors used in past paintings of the revolution. The hilt of my sword is discreetly represented as a pencil tip, which symbolizes how writing for Humanities Core has allowed me to enter portals to the past.
