The Colourful Design

"When creating our art we learned that symmetrical means the same thing on both sides. What we enjoyed most about creating our art was painting. A challenge we faced when creating our design was we used a bit more water so we were scared if it would rip." The grade 2 and 3 students worked together in small groups talking about how to create a design that used shapes, lines, patterns, textures, and colours to create a symmetrical design. They developed social tolerance and empathy for each other through conversations about how they worked together, how they shared the materials, and in writing about what they learned and what challenges they had as a group. They solved their design and social problems and discussed on their own and with me their solutions or not. The students worked together to explore wax crayons, pencil crayons, and old markers dipped in paint on one large surface and they expressed their experiences in their design and feelings through working with colour.
