Communities Essence , 2023
Multi-media

"The hands of the piece we drawn in charcoal, the black background in acrylic, and the scenery in acrylic. When composing this art piece, I reflected on the following prompt, “What does the word community mean to you?” I wanted to showcase that no sole person can create a community, and it is people who shape how a community results. To do this, I drew different hands surrounding a welcoming scenery/community in a heart shape (the heart represents teamwork), to showcase that a welcoming community is created by those in it. I decided to make the hands in monochromatic black and white to demonstrate equality, and that regardless of skin tone, religion, or occupation, every individual can contribute to a happy community. The idea that colour is only found in in the scenery was strategically used to show that the hands of individuals working together can bring life (or colour) to a community. Therefore, the overall deeper meaning behind the piece is that a community consists of more people than a place and that all individuals, regardless of skin tone, create a welcoming community.
