Peter Anton inspired sculpture

Peter Anton (born 1963 in New Haven, Connecticut) is an American artist and sculptor. His primary subject matter is food with an emphasis on chocolates and other sweets. Often referred to as "Candy Warhol," Anton creates giant realistic sculptures and is best known for his "bigger than life" boxed chocolates.
At times Anton's studio can resemble a sweet shop since it is filled with dozens of real treats which he uses as models. His beginning process is to eat, smell, feel, study and dissect a new food over and over again in order to hyper-familiarise himself with the new subject. He then begins the long and tedious process of sculpting, carving, sanding, painting, and construction of his mixed media works. Peter Anton produces oversized, lushly detailed, delicious-looking, and subtly unsettling sculptures of food, especially sweets. Like Claes Oldenberg, Anton plays with scale, blowing up donuts, lollipops, boxes of chocolate, and banana splits into absurdly large, somewhat menacing proportions. Viewers are more likely to be consumed by his colourful confections than able to consume them. Concerned with craft as much as concept, Anton carefully renders each detail of his sculptures, down to every last sugar crystal.
Inspired by the breathtaking art of Peter Anton with focus on his giant boxes of chocolates, the students in Illuminator I class set off on a sweet adventure of their own to craft a delicious looking sweet work of art. They spent quite some time working on this project that required patience and dedication as every stage of creation needed some time to complete and dry/set so we could proceed to the next level. Students used a variety of traditional and unconventional art materials, practised and learned some new art making techniques and experimented with different art tools. During the process they learned how to cast shapes from plaster using plastic egg carton as a mould, perfected their ability to paint, drizzle and splatter paint and to choose the right combination of colours, had fun decorating their art piece using variety of tactile materials and finally straighten their artistic ability to arrange a final composition to complete their delicious looking sculpture good enough to trick one’s eye. That was certainly a challenging task to complete and our students handled it with skill and persistence and are quite proud of their hard work!
