For this painting, Noel was inspired by an old photograph. The scenery reminded her of a movie from the '50s or '60s, which is an era she is very fond of. The title for the painting stands for the man smoking a cigarette, as well as for the clothes worn by the men portrayed which is often referred to as "Smoking" (tuxedo) in colloquial german.
