Sudden Shower over Shin-Ohashi Bridge and Atake, from One Hundred Famous Views of Edo , 1857
18.6 x 14 in (h x w)
Woodblock print

This glimpse of pedestrians and rowers caught in an unexpected rainstorm is one of the most recognizable of Hiroshige’s scenes from his One Hundred Famous Views of Edo series. Edo is the former name of the growing city now known as Tokyo. Hiroshige’s series not only captures the local sights of Edo in transient moments, but his use of the woodcut allowed these images of the bustling metropolis to be produced in multiple and shared across Japan and the world.
