Fleeting Effects
20 x 16 in (h x w)

The following section of the exhibition explores the representation of time, the ways in which artists have attempted to capture the transient experiences of everyday life and the ‘otherworldly,’ and how they did so by using strategically-selected printmaking techniques. From sudden changes in weather to shadowy settings lit by flickering candlelight, printmakers have incorporated the fleeting elements of lived experience into their printed images. The narrative events and atmospheric qualities depicted in these prints resemble the dynamic, ever-changing world around us. Many of these artists are interested in the creation of dramatic effects of light and shadow, which is part of a search for tonality that has for centuries motivated innovations in print technologies in a medium that has historically been understood as predominantly linear. Several printmakers challenge themselves to create scenes set at night, illuminated only by the firelight or moonlight. Additionally, artists have ruminated on the passage of time and the fleeting nature of life itself through depicting floral still lifes and seasonal landscapes.
