Nadia Kisseleva MA

Nadia Kisseleva was born in a small industrial town in Russia, where she began training in art when she was fourteen.

After working in East Africa on ethnographic data for over a decade, her paintings acquired vibrant colours and dramatic contrasts.

From 2000, while studying art in the United Kingdom, Nadia’s work became more reflective on theoretical topics in art and became engaged with socio-political issues.

Her project ‘Stripped’ brings together her experiences of living in places of diverse cultures. In 2019 it was exhibited at the Venice Biennale, ‘Personal Structures Identities’, ECC.

Nadia lives and works in the United Kingdom. Her artworks can be found in private and public collections around the world.

‘Urban Portraits
In ‘Urban Portraits' the artist reveals the vulnerability of people in the face of forces beyond their control in an ever-changing urban environment. The artwork shows the images of city inhabitants of different social and age groups; all together they make a vivid and strong representation.

‘A Woman Looking at Men…’
Inspired by Siri Hustvedt’s renowned essay ‘A Woman Looking at Men Looking at Women’, these paintings challenge a traditional perception of ‘gaze’ in the portrayal of the female nude as a passive object.
Painted by a female artist, this genre acquires a new dimension that questions this representation. In Nadia’s paintings female nudes are represented as dynamic and vibrant and, always, in a kind of motion. This approach sets to breach the traditional depiction and creates a different relationship in the genre of nude. Here, the paintings of female nudes embrace the idea of modern womanhood.

‘Siblings’
In ‘Siblings’ the artist unlocks an intimate world of children and the complex relationship between them. In painting ‘Hansel and Gretel’, the artist examines the connections between fairy tales and present-day living. On the other hand, in ‘The Game’, she focused on an intimate and tranquil moment in the life of two young girls.
