The Dark Mining Industry’s Bright Side , 2023
150 x 150 x 2 cm (h x w x d)
Presentation

The extraction of mineral resources contributes to adjacent sectors of the economy in ways that academic research has not evaluated so far. The mining industry itself focuses on what can be discussed in a politically correct manner at board meetings and conferences but neglects to address fields that may be interpreted as sensitive or offensive. However, empirical evidence has identified relationships between mining and other forms of economic activity that open new academic research avenues.
We have studied the link between profitability in the mining sector and demand for escort services and related industries. The results illustrate that despite the commonly discussed negative consequences of mining activity, parts of the economy see significant benefits as a result. Our research concludes with the suggestion of an index that assesses this positive impact and can lend itself to other sectors too.
The aforementioned approach leads to an unbiased reflection of reality, which is not subject to political correctness and pushes the boundaries of scientific research.
