Photograph shows a large group portrait of African American officers from the 5th Provisional Company seated and standing in front of a building at the Fort Des Moines Provisional Army Officer Training School in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1917. The government sent the first Black men to train as officers to Des Moines, Iowa, because they did not want them to get too much attention.
