CONSTRUCTION of Friday Mosque in Samarkand, 1480's , 1480's
28 x 16.8 x 0.1 cm (h x w x d)

Zafarnama manuscript of Sultan Husayn, Fol 359v.
John Work Garrett Library John Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, USA.
COMMENTS: After Timur captured Delhi (1398) with the killing of 100,000 inhabitants, he took all the Indian stone-masons to Samarkand to help build the Friday Mosque.
Note the clear indication of the different ethnicities of the artisans and slaves.
A nice touch of humour- the elephant tugging one of the labourers with its trunk.
