GARDEN Royal Entertainment, 1468

Opening pages f. 1v-2r) of an anthology of poetry produced in Shamakhi (Shirvan) in 1468, North Provincial Timurid style painting on Ming decorated paper (British Library, London, UK. Add.16561.

COMMENT: The scene is of a prince entertaining in his garden. What is perhaps more interesting is the backing paper. This coloured paper was produces in China and was highly valued in Central Asia bioth for its colour and its texture. The Timurids keps intese constacts, particularly with the Yongle Emperor (reigned 1402-1424). It is likely that the paper was a gift of one of the visiting delegations.
