My name is Arzoo Azad, I was born and brought up in Karachi, Pakistan. I am a Visual artist. I completed my Bachelor's of Fine Art from Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture (batch of 2019). I have a double major in Painting and Printmaking. I have showcased my works in numerous groups exhibitions locally. I also attended an Art Residency at the School of Visual Arts (2020), New York. I am currently doing my masters, in Print, from the Royal College of Art (RCA), London. I am working with shared female experiences in the Asian households/Country, while thinking about the power dynamics in relations to gendered violence and abuse. I am also looking at the issue of safety and security of women, as well as, idea of veil and veiling in relations to the female body and their experiences with the male gaze. My work stems off of my personal experiences in life, as a woman, and the abuse and harassment that I have personally faced, which was directed towards me by either the men in my extended family or the strange men on the streets. I want to use my artwork as a tool to hopefully aid in dismantling patriarchal structures, help women change the narratives for themselves and to reclaim their own body, personality and identity.
