Madelaine Millar

Madelaine Millar was born and raised in Missoula, Montana, and spent five years in Boston, Massachusetts studying journalism.

She rediscovered her love of visual art during the pandemic, and began to identify her unique voice when an overlapping bad breakup, unexpected move, major job change, and serious surgical procedure made for a deeply strange 2022. She is now living on the road full-time, and working as an artist and freelance writer.

About the work: I painted With the Heart Ripped Out to hold the horror of watching the genocide taking place in the Gaza Strip as a white person living on colonized land in the USA. A genocide took place to put me where I am, and if Israel is successful in Gaza, the result will be white people like me doing empty land acknowledgements there in 200 years. This painting conveys the grief, hollowness, and undesirability of inheriting a legacy soaked in blood, and a warning to the leaders of Israel that their future great-grandchildren don't want the world they are creating.
