“Timor et Salvos”
Fear and Survival

On the 24th of February 2008, the unit I was attached to geared up and began a rendezvous with destiny. An event proceeded to take place that would alter my world by a vast margin, all that I have come to know as normal would fade into the ether shortly thereafter.

This piece is the face given to the reaction, state of mind, or programing developed from the necessity to endure the stresses of austere and often hostile environments.

This piece personifies being able to identify a time where crisis was being experienced and utilizing the tools at my disposal. Much like a “Body Map” where an image is produced by means of line art, color, and texture to give a tangible and identifiable depiction of the emotion or emotions being experienced, I began to illustrate and personify the familiar sensations. Although the medium of digital art may not have given me an exact tactile experience, the process of creating and the overall product left me relieved, in the sense that now I had a visual depiction of the obstacles experienced in those times of difficulty and distress making them far more manageable and discreet, especially when surrounded by a critical and under educated public.

The beast is birthed from this enclosure of murkiness in what I can only describe as a Faustian deal born from a necessity to protect the wellbeing of its host, perfectly preserving the spirit of survival at the expenditure of normality and sense of belonging.
