ARTIST BIO

Michelle Lubin (MDFerrera Fine Art) is a Southern California based multidisciplinary artist, whose work ranges from drawing, writing, mural painting, and advocating for mental health and accessible art through her local Arts Bureau and elementary schools. What began as a therapuetic outlet, Lubin has built into an art career that has come full circle. Drawing and writing were encouraged early by her (late) Artist father, Richard Ferrera and developed while earning a BA in Fine Art from Montclair State University, New Jersey, though the real “art career” education came from taking the plunge from side job to full-time career with a move to Southern California.

From her garage studio, she finds healing in the process; whether drawing representative self or custom portraits on wood panels, preparing for a mural or curating the next local art exhibition. Lubin’s fine art series’ are heavily inspired and validated by music and the artists’ personal experiences. Her success is attributed to her ability to evoke empathy through the use of simple materials and a monochromatic style that captures heightened expressions and gestures. While awards and accolades have elevated her exposure and sales since pursuing art full-time in 2010, it continues to be her efforts participating in community art projects and outreach that fulfill the artists’ mission and passion.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Creative expression is essential to my craft, individual well-being, and community understanding. When I can’t find the words, which is often, I lean into art. I create representational self-portraits pulled directly from journal entries, drawing these heightened moments mostly with pencil, utilizing music to validate feelings and harness energy. Keeping most of my series monochromatic eliminates distraction for my creative process while also helping to evoke empathy from viewers as they relate to the artworks expressions, gestures, and music inspired titles.

Using wood as my canvas is an essential part of my process, the smell of fresh cut pieces and sanding conjures comfort through nostalgic memories of working alongside my father. The wood also serves as a mirror reflecting the unique grains that mimic our individuality. Whether the wood is custom built or donated scraps from friends and shops, working with recycled and natural elements keeps me close to the outdoors that provides healing equal to art.

In my garage studio I find freedom in my own process; moving, dancing, always music for release and clarity before diving into a particular piece, and space for experimentation. While my artwork is heavily process driven, it is the finished product, a vulnerable figure that starts dialogue, connecting me to viewers, collectors, and community. When we start with self-reflection, we can begin to heal beyond our own reach. I hope to continue to advocate for more present and engaging art opportunities, education and outlets.
