Green washed, brain washed? , 2024

In 2018, BNP Paribas duped eco-friendly investors into buying $95 million of green bonds to finance the reforestation of land in Sumatra, Indonesia by Michelin. What they did not disclose was that this land, one of the most biodiverse hotspots on the planet, had been previously deforested by Michelin as well. Nor that the reforestation was, in fact, a monoculture rubber plantation.
In our art work, we show a superhero green investor believing in the righteousness of his action, being blinded and restrained by his bank through its deceptive presentation and omission of critical information.
How, as individuals, can we hold banks and corporates accountable for this kind of perverse practices?
