November 21, 1915 // The Endurance sinks

Digital scan and editing from physical book

This is the fourth in a series of found poems I created from the pages of Ernest Shackleton's book "South," which documents his 1914 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition.

For this project, I created a timeline of significant events in the expedition, beginning with the expedition's sail aboard the Endurance from London on August 1, 1914, and ending with the rescue of Shackleton's crew from Elephant Island on August 30, 1916. I then created a found poem for each event in the timeline. The project resulted in 29 found poems, 10 of which are erasures, like this one.
