Margaret of Anjou, Queen of England and wife to Henry VI took control of the royal army during the Wars of the Roses in the mid-fifteenth century. I wanted to portray her in a symbolic role as leader, her troops in the distance on the field behind. Depicted here at the age of thirty, she would continue to fight tirelessly for the throne on behalf of her son Prince Edward. Her appearance and likeness is influenced by contemporary descriptions of the queen, and her clothes replicated from a portrait of her in a contemporary manuscript.
