Winifred Greenhalgh 1

My work is a humble attempt to pay homage to Judith Scotts life and work. I thought it was the least I could do to step away from my comfort zone of painting to see how it feels using yarn to create as she did. Judith Scott made a profound impression on me both in terms of her terrible and redemptive life story and the art she was able to make through her reconciliation with family, bringing with it love, acceptance and space to create as she wished.

Born with Down's Syndrome and also deaf Judith spent the first seven years of her life in a kind of bliss playing, learning and sleeping beside her twin sister Joyce until one night she was sent away to an institution where she stayed until her sister finally rescued her at the age of 42. Her life was characterized by extremes. Not many people get to experience the love and intimacy that Judith shared with her twin sister who describes early memories

“…sensations without words…In discovering my body, I’m discovering Judy’s…When I roll over I touch her arm and she moves closer to me. There is little difference between movement and response. My body, her body, already fused in our sense memories”

Judith must have experienced intense fear, loss, despair. We also know from her sister's book Entwined, that she knew abuse violence and neglect thereafter.

Judith's life and art teaches us that one does not even need to be aware that they are an artist to be a truly great one. She also leaves us puzzled as to whether she was communicating or whether she was just soothing and satisfying herself with what became her life's purpose. In those last 20 years of her life where she immersed herself in her art work, we witnessed her intelligence, focus and proactive creativity, every day living life to the full not caring what anybody else thought of her work. She understood in her own way that there was interest in her work but there was no trace of ego to interfere with her daily process and rituals.
