Harriet Tubman earned the right to be a revolutionary figure in American history due to her relentless efforts to challenge and dismantle the institution of slavery. Born into enslavement herself, Tubman escaped to freedom in 1849 and subsequently returned to the South numerous times to lead others along the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses that facilitated the escape of enslaved individuals to free states and Canada.
