Ashendiye In Lalibela 5 , 2019 - 2022

This photo project portrays the essence of the colorful Ashendiye cultural festival, especially in Lalibela, Ethiopia. Documenting this project is deeply meaningful to me, as my father is from Lalibela, which allowed me to visit the city and indulge in the culture often. One cultural event that I never missed was the Ashendiye festival. As my interest in photography has grown over the years, the festival has provided me with an opportunity to capture incredible moments. The Ashendiye festival marks the end of a 16-day fasting period and is typically celebrated for three to ten successive days. It is an annual celebration held in the Amhara and Tigray regions, featuring cultural costumes and traditional dances. The festival has a strong emphasis on the participation of girls and is also considered as Women's Day. This photo project I have undertaken includes two Ashendiye celebrations, one captured in 2019 and another in 2022. My passion for capturing these photographs stems from the lack of proper visual representations of the Ashendiye celebration in Lalibela.
