In "The Attributes of Shame" project, I explore the theme of women's inequality from ancient times to the present. I am interested in archaic traditions and rituals of the past that sometimes find echoes in contemporary reality. My ethnographic research encompasses all cultures where I find the most brutal and unjust ways of influencing and taming women in the past.
The project involves the creation of 5 large format canvases (over two meters). One of the works focuses on the medieval tradition of the "mask of shame", in which a woman who was a gossip, a slanderer, and was very insolent was given a "mask of shame". This mask was made of metal and placed on the woman's head. Such a measure was reserved only for the most incorrigible gossipers and slanderers. But in some cases this status could be applied to any woman. The phenomenon of such almost torturous means of character correction and development of submissive women still exists in some countries and families today. The problem of a woman's voice and her place in society remains relevant today.
The compositional structure of the work refers to the canonical story of the Last Supper. In my interpretation, however, the apostles are replaced by women as a way of rethinking the current problems of women's role in society and culture.
