JAKE MILKOVICH , 2012

Watercolor

Jake Milkovich, aged 23, was steeped in a childhood of 'playing army,' spurred on by his father's gift of the movie "Top Gun" at the tender age of 7. Dreaming of soaring through the skies as a fighter pilot, he seized the opportunity to fulfill his aspirations by enlisting in the Marines at 17. Transitioning to Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island proved a formidable challenge, yet Jake's unwavering determination propelled him to leadership roles, eventually landing him a coveted spot at infantry school and a subsequent assignment to safeguard President Obama at Camp David.

Deployed as a platoon leader to Afghanistan in April 2011, Jake initially encountered a lull in combat during the poppy season, only to witness the harrowing escalation of violence post-harvest. Amidst the chaos, he confronted the harsh realities of war, witnessing numerous casualties and grappling with the loss of a mentor to a fatal grenade explosion. From this crucible of conflict, Jake emerged with a profound spiritual awareness and a deep-seated reverence for life's fragility.

Struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Jake finds solace in the camaraderie of his fellow veterans, even as he embarks on a new chapter of his life, pursuing higher education alongside his partner, Kelsey, at NOVA Southeastern University in Florida. Together, they are spearheading the creation of the NOVA Student Veterans Association, recognizing the pressing need to support returning veterans in their transition to civilian life.

This portrait captures the essence of a young man shaped by the crucible of war—a testament to resilience, perseverance, and the enduring bonds of camaraderie forged amidst adversity.
