Colonel Fernandez struggled with "Keratoconus," a condition that rendered him blind.

Raised by his grandmother in California, he served a combat tour in Afghanistan from 2003 to 2004. He became aware of his disability in 2008 when he could no longer see the firing of guns, leading to his retirement that same year. Presently, he contributes to the ROTC for recruiting efforts.
