Deception

Always cognisant of the classics and their interesting mythology which inspires me, this group pose suggested the Sirens and their luring of Odysseus and his sailors onto their islands and into their deceiving clutches. By the sailors placing beeswax in their ears and tying Odysseus himself to the ship's mast the Sirens were denied their company. A further emblem of deception in mythology is that of the Trojan Horse and at first look it is not totally evident that this black shape in the painting represents it and thus the viewer might also find themselves deceived. My process started with the figure group painted in grisaille followed by a transparent layer of burning red to signify desire and danger. Thereafter I compose the shapes and colours to compliment the group : the blues of the their Agean Sea, the greens of their sun-baked shrubs and the yellows of their flowers.
