Born in the Northern part of Sri Lanka, I was brought up in an artistic environment in a Tamil home. I inherited creative dexterity and profundity from my parents. As a female child, I was very much involved in the art of Kolam making and this resurfaced in later years as a leitmotif of my paintings. Inspired by this cultural context, with the academic background from the Nsukka art school (Nigeria), my practice is thus, symbolically spiritual, academic, expressive, conceptual and contemplative.
The conceptual framework of my art is framed in Hybrid Aesthetics. Societal happenings provide the impetus which my creativity codifies. I am inspired by women; often drawn to the pains and pleasures that are peculiar to us, hence my works, oftentimes, revolve around the theme of womanhood. The question of identity is also a crucial variable in my practice. My dual citizenship results in a synthesis of pictorial elements from the Tamils of Sri-Lanka and the Tiv of Nigeria throughout my works. In this context, my paintings reflect a sociocultural connection with Tamil and Tiv cultures. They celebrate cultural diversity within our pluralistic society, while also affirming and enhancing pride in each individual’s heritage.
