The Meroë Head
, 27-25 BCE
46.2 x 26.5 x 29.4 cm (h x w x d)
Bronze, calcite, glass and plaster.
One of the few remaining bronze images of Augustus, this statue embodies Roman power and legacy. Yet this statue was found buried at the foot of elaborately decorated ruins of a “victory temple” within the city of Meroë.
