Havel believed that only when the "independent life of society" is cultivated can the powerless be prevented from becoming new masters. His provision of a new defiant view on democracy opposing the outdated idea of communism battled the then disillusionment within Czech society through the velvet revolution. His stern expression, created through layering of skin tone colors, spotlights his then determination to end communist rule, and create a bright future for generations to come.
