Plate with Herakles and the bear , 5th-7th century
Gilded silver

The plate depicts a scene from Greek legend where Herakles carries on his shoulders the Erymanthian boar he has captured, to the courtyard of the palace of King Eurystheus. The king emerges from the pithos (grain-jar) where he has taken refuge, just in time to stop Herakles depositing the Boar on him.
