Title: "Flor de Sol" by E. Barrios - Digital Collage

Description: Queer Calendario is a series drawn from a collection of Mexican calendar images, initially popularized by Enseñanza Objetiva in Mexico City during the early 20th century, who championed the art of artists such as Jesus Huelguera, who used imagery full of rich symbolism of an enduring traditional heritage; however, they also inadvertently reinforce certain stereotypes still prevalent in Mexican society, including machismo, racism, and the legacy of colonization. So In my reinterpretation, this calendar represents my vision of these images as queer, offering a deliberate rewriting of history through my lens.

Artist's Bio: I am a Queer Chicanx artist whose artistic endeavors serve as a testament to the transformative potential of art, emphasizing the power of rewriting and complicating narratives that have historically excluded and obscured Latinx LGBTQIA+ voices. I employ various mediums such as collage, sculpture, video, installation, performance, and painting, as well as delving into archives, art history, and the realms of joy and desire while simultaneously celebrating Latinx LGBTQIA+ stories to craft non-linear forms of storytelling that defy traditional patriarchal structures.

My dedication to this exploration is evident through my artistic achievements. I recently graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in art practice.  I am currently an artist in residence at Art Share L.A. My notable showcases include the Berkeley Museum of Art and Pacific Film Archive's 'SC Film Fest 2024', 'Nice Knowing You Honors Exhibition,' and the 'Shifting Shadows Senior Thesis Exhibit' both at Worth Ryder Gallery in Berkeley and 'WEAR in the World' at Bauer Wurster Hall, Berkeley, CA. Additionally, my work has been featured in the 'Student Juried Art Exhibit' at Mary Boone Gallery in Pasadena, CA. My contributions also earned me a place in the UC Berkeley Art Practice 2023 Honors Program.
