Bracelet , 1550-1680

12.7 × 8.9 × 8.9 cm
Ivory, copper

This intricately carved armlet, part of a pair crafted for an Oba of the Benin Kingdom, is a testament to the kingdom's rich heritage. At palace festivals, the king and chiefs of Benin would wear such armlets. Created from ivory acquired through trade with Europeans, it features images of mudfish and Portuguese heads, both referring to the king's divine nature and wealth.
