Mike (MOSHE) Kalmowicz: " Propaganda can last for thousands of years. Spain brought anti-Semitism to Poland. Russia persecuted the Jews. Even today, films like The Passion of the Christ are propagating anti-Semitism in the United States. I hope no human being will need to go through an experience like I went through. I hope it is the end of suffering and that this is not repeated again". Born the son of a kosher butcher in Ckelce, Poland, it seems to me that I was raised in the most anti-Semitic city in Poland in the thirties. During my school years, I was once called a "Christ Killer." The principal dismissed me from the school, and I was not allowed to return. When the Germans came in 1939, I was marched off to a slave labor camp, but managed to escape and return to my family in the ghetto. My sister, father, and brother were sent to Auschwitz. While in the concentration camp, my father and brother did not talk to each other for fear that if the authorities knew they were related, one would be killed. My father did not survive, but my brother and sister did. I was sent to Treblinka then on to Dachau where we were liberated by the Americans. My sister survived because a member of the English aristocracy in London paid the Germans for two hundred children. Those children were held in Sweden. My sister was among them. From there, she went to Argentina. I was rescued near the end of the war by a man named General Snyder. It was General Snyder who gave me the name "Mike. "When Golda Meir came to the deportation camp where Mike lived. Mike joined up to fight for Israel. He married Ciona Zartow Zimertow. and they lived in Israel for eleven years before coming to the United States. Here, they settled in Memphis, Tennessee, and brought his brother from Germany to five there as well. Mike opened a restaurant. Cafe Sinclair, which became very successful. Upon retiring, he moved to Florida.
