Studiolo from the Ducal Palace in Gubbio, Italy, ca. 1478–82. Walnut, beech, rosewood, oak, and fruitwoods in walnut base; 485 x 518 x 384 cm. Metropolitan Museum of Art, 39.153
485 x 518 cm (h x w)

A variety of lavish wood adorn the inlaid walls of this Italian studiolo. Faux lattice cabinets line the walls, nonchalantly cocked open to reveal the insides. All kinds of objects are rendered in shocking realism: numerous books, musical instruments, scientific objects, weaponry and religious items. These items all depict a different part of life, and some even represent important virtues, such as temperance in the hourglass and justice in the sword. Owned by a political leader of the 15th century, this room was used to meet with guests, both political and otherwise. The very creation of these walls displayed this man's wealth to the guest, but the objects displayed within showcased what kind of man he was, something especially important for a man of his status.
