Porn Still no. 5 (lick)
acrylic on canvas

This piece is part of a series of paintings investigating the fetishization of lesbian sexuality by the straight male gaze. Based on screenshots taken from various porn sites, they call attention to the objectification and dehumanization of women within the modern porn industry and the repercussions such media has on broader cultural attitudes with the rise of the Internet culture and the extreme misogyny and homophobia proliferated through forces such as the manosphere. In addition, by reproducing this imagery through the medium of paint, I seek to situate these contemporary issues within the long history of female objectification and exploitation in western art and the ways in which patriarchal society has, since its conception, used depictions of female bodies to demean and control fem people, while simultaneously reclaiming this medium as a form of self-expression and empowerment. Using a simplified, painterly style that emphasizes the rich colors and sensual forms, the work invites a new perspective by demonstrating the inherent beauty present in the imagery, thereby shifting the narrative from one of oppression to a celebration of love and intimacy.
