About Publication: The photographs in the Soil series attempt a visual exploration of the city’s surface. I use the telephoto lens as a laboratory microscope to examine the dense structure of the urban landscape, looking for areas where the artificial world seems to transform into a concrete ecosystem, where condominiums, streets, highways, and entire blocks appear to collide with one another, forming solidified canyons, rivers, and gorges. I observe a new layer formed by buildings, antennas, satellite dishes, solar water heaters, awnings, and rooftops that sprawl across the At- tica basin, leaving the earthy ground—the soil—exposed only in a few places, such as the hilltops of Athens, where I position myself to take the photographs.
