ABOUT TYRA BARNES!

I am Tyra Barnes, an emerging artist based in Atlanta, Georgia, with a focus on contemporary exploration of the African American experience through ceramic sculpture. Currently, my artistic endeavors are dedicated to exploring the connections within the black community, delving into how beauty shapes identity and black femininity. I place a special emphasis on ornate hairstyles and, more recently, I have been intrigued by articulating connections through material objects. This involves appropriating the symbolism associated with chains in the black community to express a profound sense of connection. My artistic practice includes functional pottery, portraiture, and chainmail sculpted from terracotta. In December 2023, I graduated from Georgia State University, earning my Bachelor's in Fine Arts with a concentration in ceramics. During my academic journey, I completed an internship under the guidance of Westly Harvey, one of the heads of the ceramics department.
