Autumn Clouds in Layered Mountains

This second painting by Huang Gongwang pictures virtually the same scene, but if anything, it is more abstract and fanciful than the former. In his treatise he wrote ‘“In painting each tree, each rock, one should give rein to the ink and let it break free; in this way, the manner of the scholar will be achieved. If there is too much detailed description, the painting will fall into the class of artisan painting.
