Audio reactive installation, multichannel sound & video
DendroSonic is an audiovisual installation that immerses audiences in the hidden signal system of trees. The forest is permeated with a profound communication system, relying solely on nonverbal signals—from chemical elements to electric impulses. This nonhuman communicative network includes different species, transcending the limitations of human language and connecting them through the universal language of nature.
At its core, DendroSonic aims to create an immersive space where viewers can engage with the “being” of trees. The installation sheds light on the invisible signals and imperceptible vibrations exchanged among trees. The rich data collected by artists of Splaces challenges anthropocentric perspectives and questions assumptions about human exceptionalism in relation to other species. The combination of natural data and innovative technologies in the project broadens our perception, paving the way for our communication with digital tree forms.
In the initial stage, Splaces created photogrammetric tree models by scanning physical trees. Simultaneously, they delved into the unique soundscape of each tree, capturing its distinctive auditory signature using geophones and ultra-sensitive piezo microphones. The subsequent step involves interpreting the amassed audio and visual data, giving rise to an immersive audiovisual experience that allows viewers to imagine the essence of being a tree.
Within the installation space, the digital representation of each tree dynamically responds to sounds and vibrations created by its digital counterparts. Detecting signals from other digital trees, each model undergoes changes in shape, texture, movement, and color. This transformative process enables an exploration of attempting to sense what the tree itself experiences—an artistic interpretation of this extraordinary communicative phenomenon.
