These two large vases contain an inscriptions dedication by a man offering them to a Daoist temple, as a prayer for the protection of his family and peace for his son and daughter. The inscription allows us to date them as being produced in 1351. This shows that blue and white porcelain was already well-established in Jingdezhen by that date. The form of the vase was modelled on ancient bronze designs.
