Strictly speaking ‘stoneware’ is a term covering all types of pottery. However, once porcelain emerged as a genre of its own, its use has been applied to ‘non-porcelain’ earthenware. The artefacts cover pieces intended for the court as well as more utilitarian vessels and utensils. The designs are often less refined, but all the more charming for that very reason.
