ARTIST BIO

I am an interdisciplinary artist looking at the relationship between art, science and data with a particular interest in astronomy and climate change.
I was born in 1988 in Kent and am a proud neurodiverse artist, I recently graduated from Central Saint Martins’s MA Art and Science program in 2019 with a distinction. I also attended UCA Maidstone for my foundation diploma and Kingston University London where I studied for a BA in Fine Art graduating in 2010.

I have exhibited widely in the UK and abroad as well as visited and worked with several sights of scientific and historical significance such as CERN, Royal Observatory Greenwich, The Royal Society and UCL Observatory.

I was invited to become an artist in residence with Planet Labs in 2021, where I was given access to Planet’s global imaging library to develop work looking at the effects of climate change. I was fortunate enough to be able to prove that community-led vegetation planting organisation The Great Green Wall of Africa has been creating a real difference to the environment and more importantly, the people who have been experiencing the most extreme effects of climate change.
This opportunity then led to my work being launched into space last year as part of Planet’s Art in Space programme, I was invited to design some artwork that would be placed on one of Planet's photo satellites which is currently in orbit around the Earth, which is one of my proudest achievements

I am currently working on a project inspired by women in science history and their contributions to astronomy in an ongoing project The Colour of Starlight where I use a combination of digital and analogue art-making techniques to create works directly influenced by the colours found in the cosmos.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am an interdisciplinary artist who examines the relationship between art and science. My main subjects of focus are astronomy, the future of space travel, data literacy and climate change.
I work with a number of different mediums including painting, drawing, textiles and printing. The subject matter and the mediums I use to make my work create a partnership between analogue and digital art-making techniques which mirror the relationship between art and science.

Currently, I am working with Embroidery and Ai in a series of works called Starlight Threads. The colours found in the pieces are directly from the starlight using a combination of my own photographs of the night sky and Ai coding techniques I am able to pinpoint the colours found in the cosmos and convert them into colour files to work with digitally. I then match the colours in the code to thread colours to create a composition from starlight. This series of works is inspired by the history of astronomy and in particular the women behind discoveries that changed our understanding of the world and the stars and who are largely ignored by history. I really enjoy the relationship between digital techniques and the embroidery process as it enables me to create many layers in the work both from a material and theoretical standpoint.
I have exhibited and taken part in residencies extensively and recently my work was launched into space as part of the Art in Space programme run by Planet Labs. I also work with creative practitioners such as musicians and other visual artists to help create a library of responses to contemporary scientific research.
