ARTIST BIO

Amelia is a painter based in Chudleigh, Devon, graduating from BA (HONS) Painting, Drawing and Printmaking from Plymouth College of art in 2017. During this time, Amelia developed her passion in portraiture and figurative art and has been practising the subjects ever since. From a young age she was inspired by Renaissance art, the technical side of the paintings but also the stories they portray. Then onto more modern painters who use the painting to express emotion and passion, such as Francis Bacon. Amelia endeavours to bring together the technical precision of the renaissance era, with the authenticity and poignancy of modern painters.
Working predominantly in oil paint, Amelia’s recent body of work is an exploration into the creation of art, and how each piece of art influences the next.
develops her practice using graphite and charcoal exploring the mediums during portrait classes that she runs in her studio in Devon. Amelia seeks to share her passion with portraiture and enjoys inviting others to spend time exploring the subject in her studio as well as running demonstrations and workshops for local art groups.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Each painting is a steppingstone. You cannot create a new painting without having created all the ones that came before. This idea led me to create my most recent body of work.
All painters are familiar with the countless rags lying around their workspace that they have used to clean their paint brushes. Looking at mine one day reminded me of photographs of Lucian Freud, rags towering in corners of his studio. They also became a feature in many of his paintings alongside the models.
My painters’ rags hold stories of previous paintings. The colours mixed for specific pieces with paint marks left from the brushes as I clean them.
For my paintings the canvas is made of these rags stitched together, stretched over a frame and prepped with clear gesso. The work is then painted directly onto the rags in oils
It is important to see all the colours and brush marks on the rags from the previous paintings in the background. The paintings remains unframed as I want the rags that stretch around the edges to be visible.
