Helix Farms Lemon Crate Label , Designed in 1897

Hubert Howe Bancroft's fruit crate label designed in 1897

With the mission in the background, a beautiful damsel in apparent distress and a mission priest lending a helping hand, this fruit crate label paints a pastoral and peaceful scene of mission life. Its an insidious distortion of the truth as the essential role of mission system was the elimination of native spirituality, culture and language.
