This magazine ad for Pullman's train services, portrays African American men as being restricted to positions of service to white passengers. During the Jim Crow era, this type of ad, which depicts African American people within a few limited roles often involving service, works to reinforce societal systems of segregation by continually portraying a racial hierarchy.
