This magazine cover depicts artist Kerry James Marshall next to a small scale version of his sculpture entitled, "A Monumental Journey," which "celebrates the legacy of the African American lawyers who founded the National Bar Association in Des Moines, IA. The piece takes the shape of two massive African talking drums stacked precariously atop one another, seemingly on the verge of toppling"(A Monumental Journey). This cover not only portrays Marshall positively, as a successful artist, but also memorializes the struggle for equality that African American lawyers in Iowa faced and their ability to overcome and band together. Together, this cover works to defy the negative stereotypes of the past and promote positive perceptions self concepts of African American people.
