This Heineken television commercial shows a man pass a beer past three African American people to a light skinned woman, finishing with the phrase "sometimes, lighter is better." Though there have been great strides made in representing African American people in advertising, streaks of racism remain, the echo of a past marked by it. The racist comment in this ad, whether intentionally made or not, acts as a call to diligence and continued critical reflection as both a creator or portrayer and as a consumer or active witness. Change happens through individuals.
