FOAPAC #2010.1.028
Stillman Sawyer was born and raised in Southern California, living in Whittier, San Pedro, and Laguna Beach. He received his BA from Pomona College, spent time in the Armed Forces, and then completed his graduate studies at Stanford University. He worked for Union Oil as an engineer, but his real passion was nature and photography. His favorite environments were high mountains, beaches, and sand dunes. Stillman bestowed the Festival of Arts $1 million as seed money for a year-round gallery for Festival artists. He would be involved in all phases of the photographic process from film development, printing, toning, all the way to matting and framing. He used only archival materials and procedures.
